Big roadtrip

Eindelijk begonnen aan de grote roadtrip. Met 2 vrienden hebben we een camper gehuurd om tot 2 juni (3 weken) rond te toeren in de west-kust van de US.

Zoals je ziet zijn we in San Fransisco gestart. Als eerste zijn we naar de beroemde Golden Gate Bridge gereden. Een brug kan niet zoveel speciaals zijn dacht ik. Maar de omgeving eromheen is erg mooi. Dat maakt het totaalplaatje adembenemend! De eerste nacht in de camper hebben we dan ook langs de brug doorgebracht. Dat gratis plekje was alleen via een zandweg te bereiken. Ook ’s nachts is het uitzicht daar geweldig. We hebben de lat qua slaaplocatie’s nu wel erg hoog gelegd, volgens mij gaan we dat niet meer overtreffen :)

De dag erna de camper laten staan en het plan was om met de bus naar de stad te gaan. Maar er stond niks aangegeven op de bushaltes. Dit zie je op veel plaatsen in de US. In Nederland is dat toch wel wat beter geregeld. Na even gewacht te hebben besloten om maar te liften. Na de 1e keer proberen kregen we al een lift. Toevallig moest hij 5 minuten in de buurt zijn van waar we wilde zijn. Ideaal!

Nog wat rondgelopen en daarna naar Alcatraz geweest. Toentertijd een van de zwaarst beveiligde gevangenissen. Het ligt op een eiland waar de meest zware criminelen hebben gezeten. Ik verwacht dat iedereen het wel van de films kent. Erg interessant om rond te lopen op een eiland met zo veel geschiedenis.

Diezelfde dag nog naar Sillicon Valley gereden. Hier liggen de grote IT bedrijven zoals Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, HP en Intel. Als IT’er konden we dit natuurlijk niet overslaan. We zijn naar Facebook geweest en hebben wat rondgelopen op de campus van Stanford University.

Daarna Yosemite. Zal er niet veel woorden over vuil maken. Erg mooi park:

Oja, mocht het nog niet duidelijk zijn. Het is nu al zomervakantie voor studenten in de US. En de school begint pas later in augustus weer. En punten heb ik ook al terug, 4 A’s en 1 C. Van de 5 vakken hoefde ik er maar 3 halen om de minor met een voldoende af te sluiten.

The big roadtrip finally started. We rented an RV with 2 friends to cruise around in the west-coast of the US.

De route is going to be as follows:

As you can see we started in San Fransisco. At first we drove to the famous Golden Gate Bridge. A bridge can’t be that special is what I thought. But the landscape around it is very beautiful. That makes the view of the bridge breath taking! We spend the first night in the RV next to the bridge. That free spot was only reachable via a dirt road. At night the view was very nice. We set the bar very high for sleeping locations, I don’t think we are going to top that :)

The next day we planned to go to the city by bus. There is almost no information at the bus stops. You see this at a lot of places in the US. This is a lot better in the Netherlands. After some waiting we decided to hitchhike. At our first try we managed to get a ride. We were very lucky that he needed to go to the same direction as us. Perfect!

After we walk around a bit we went to Alcatraz. Back in the days it was one of the most heavily secured prisons. It was on an island were the most heavy criminals stayed. I think everybody knows this from the movies. Very interesting to walk around on an island with so many history.

That same day we drove to Sillicon Valley. All the big IT company’s as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, HP and Intel are located there. As an IT guy we couldn’t skip this. We went to Facebook and we walk around on campus of the Stanford University.

Then Yosemite. I wont say too much, it's beautiful :)

Oh, if it wasn’t clear yet. It is already summer vacation for all the students in the US. In the Netherlands it starts 1,5 month later then in the US. I received my grades, it was 4 A’s and 1 C. Of the 5 courses I only needed to pass 3 to pass the minor.
